A Tribute to Jeffery Pepper

Remembering Take The Lead Founding Member Jeffrey Pepper

Jeff’s robust love of life and optimism was evident in all his endeavors. At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, Jeff was one of a small group of fanciers in the Northeast who gathered to brainstorm an idea; at Westminster KC in 1993, on a wing and a prayer, they launched Take The Lead, a charitable organization to help AKC conformation devotees cope with the financial devastation caused by HIV. With his financial acumen and innovative thinking, Jeff became Take The Lead’s first Treasurer, a role he continued to play, on and off, for nearly 30 years. He was instrumental in leading TTL from a kitchen-table idea to a multimillion dollar 501(c)3 that has helped thousands in our dog show “family.”

Outspoken and never one to shy away from a challenge, Jeff was instrumental in TTL’s expanded mission. Initially, Take The Lead mostly supported the needs of AKC dog handlers who were without health insurance during the AIDS epidemic. TTL now provides a wide range of financial support to a broad spectrum of eligible AKC fanciers.

A multi-group judge, Jeff was extremely popular worldwide, based on his unbiased eye and friendly demeanor. His most coveted assignment was the Hound Group at Westminster KC in 2018.

Also an award-winning author, Jeff was a gifted teacher, eager and willing to educate everyone, particularly about his beloved Golden Retrievers.

Jeff had a huge circle of acquaintances, quickly reaching Facebook’s maximum number of “friends.” He was a warm, back-slapping hugger who, above all, loved dogs and the people in the AKC dog world.

Within his close circle, Jeff was a loyal and loving friend. He was quirky, sometimes exasperating, but always good-humored and fun.

Jeff faced illness with enviable courage and positivity. To the end, despite adversity that would have sidelined most people, he remained active and incredibly determined. Hopefully, his indominable spirit will continue to unite and uplift his many friends and admirers.
